Jonny Greenwood sat down for a conversation with Terry Gross on the latest episode of NPR’s Fresh Air. He discussed his approach to film scores, specifically noting his recent work on Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, and Pablo Larrain’s Spencer. In addition to highlighting his most recent scores, Greenwood and Gross also discussed works from across the Radiohead member’s career as a composer. At one point, Gross played an excerpt of his Phantom Thread score and asked him how he achieved the piano’s muffled sound. “There’s a roll of felt laid between the hammers and the strings, which is why it sounds like that, and it’s a little bit out of tune just because I’m a bit lazy with my booking a piano tuner, I’m afraid,” he said.
