Lanterns co-creator Damon Lindelof has explained the real meaning behind Hal Jordan’s best line in the DCU series. The moment takes place at Hal’s funeral, where John Stewart reads the eulogy Hal wrote before his death. According to Lindelof, the line is less about Hal’s superhero legacy and more about his relationship with John.
Speaking during the Lanterns finale press conference, Lindelof explained the meaning behind Hal’s final words, “I hope I mattered.” The Hollywood Reporter reported on Lindelof’s comments, with the co-writer revealing that Hal was speaking directly to John. He said, “What I think Hal is saying is, ‘I hope I mattered to you.’ And that’s transmitting directly to John.”
This gives the scene a more personal meaning. Hal does not care whether people celebrate his achievements as a Green Lantern. Lindelof explained that Hal is not saying, “I hope I mattered because I saved the world from a giant fu—-g alien starfish.” The character also does not want public recognition for his actions.
Lindelof said, “It’s not, ‘I want there to be statues built of me. I need my name to be on an arch or monument.’” Instead, Hal wants something much simpler from the people he leaves behind. He added, “It’s just, ‘I hope I’m remembered and that I had a significant role in your life.’”
That interpretation is especially relevant to Hal’s relationship with John. Throughout the season, Hal serves as an experienced Green Lantern and mentor figure to John. However, they have a complicated relationship, as they approach their responsibilities differently. Hal’s final words therefore give their relationship an emotional conclusion.
Who else stars in Lanterns besides Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan?
Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart opposite Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. The cast also features Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe Macon, and Ulrich Thomsen as Thaal Sinestro.
Created by Chris Mundy, Lindelof, and Tom King, Lanterns follows Hal and John as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska. The case eventually leads them toward a larger mystery connected to the Green Lantern mythology.
Lanterns Season 1 is now available to watch on HBO Max.
