Masters of the Universe (2026) has hit an impressive streaming milestone despite its disappointing theatrical run. Following a lukewarm performance at the box office, the movie has now emerged as a massive streaming hit.
Masters of the Universe debuted on Prime Video on July 22, just weeks after its theatrical release. In its first week of streaming, the movie scored the No. 1 overall ranking in Nielsen’s streaming ratings for July 20-26. It generated 1.17 billion minutes of watch time for the week.
Meanwhile, the only other title to cross the billion-minute mark is The Big Bang Theory, as recorded by Nielsen’s ratings, reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The comedy series had 1.12 billion minutes of viewing time on HBO Max.
Other popular movies and television shows to make the list are Netflix’s The Hawk (2026), Prime Video’s Ride or Die (2026), HBO Max’s House of the Dragon, and more.
Masters of the Universe turns a disappointing box-office run into a streaming win
Masters of the Universe grossed a worldwide total of $114 million against a budget of $170 million. Addressing the disappointing box office performance, Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief, Kevin Wilson, said at the time, “[Director] Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special.”
He added, “And this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy—building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.” (via Variety)
Despite the lackluster theatrical run, the movie delivered a major comeback on streaming, generating over a billion views.
Masters of the Universe is based on the franchise of the same name by the popular toy manufacturing company Mattel. The movie follows the adventures of He-Man as he tries to save his home planet, Eternia, from the evil Skeletor. It stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Charlotte Riley, Morena Baccarin, and more.
