That grin from the cover photo pretty much tells you the story. On ‘JOSE,’ J Balvin is out to have a good time. The Colombian superstar’s sixth studio album is one of those go-everywhere programs that makes the reggaeton hero seem like a versatile experimentalist while sustaining all his global street cred. From the saucy dembo of “Perra” to the personal deets of “7 de Mayo,” he throws a wide net and delivers some of his most engaging work. We’ve been planning to capture some of ‘JOSE’’s stellar tracks in performance for months now (as we did in 2020 with the ‘Colores’ material) and in August we had our shot, as both Balvin and Vevo took over sections of New York to render their creative collab. “Suerte” was shot on a Brooklyn roof, with the Manhattan skyline in the background – a dazzling start to a cool performance series. “It was an amazing experience working with the Vevo team to bring my new album to life visually, and I’m grateful for their continued support following the ‘Colores’ campaign we did together,” says the Medellín native. “This album is very important to me. I felt like I just wanted to make songs that I would want to hear as a music fan, as Jose, not J Balvin.” Our celebration of Latinx Heritage Month begins with a blast.
