Sting performs as Philippe Petit recreates Twin Towers highwire stunt

Last week, Philippe Petit celebrated the 50th anniversary of his Twin Towers highwire stunt by recreating it at Manhattan’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he was accompanied by Sting.

While the 74-year-old French artist precariously walked the tightrope, Sting played his songs “Fragile” and “Fields of Gold” while accompanied by a live orchestra. According to Showbiz 411, he returned to close the evening by premiering a new song called “Let the Great World Spin” from an upcoming musical about Petit.

Watch fan-shot footage and a full stream of the event below. Sting comes on stage around the 23:20 mark, though the audio for “Fragile” is muted. However, you can hear “Fields of Gold” just fine.

Petit made his unauthorized walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7th, 1974. Five decades later, that is no longer possible due to the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001, but Petit told the Associated Press that he didn’t want to “remind people of the doomed day” with his performance.

This fall, Sting will be joined by guitarist and longtime collaborator Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas on a North American tour. See the full schedule, and get tickets here.
