People confirmed the news that the actor died yesterday after a long and at times public battle with breast cancer.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” her publicist Leslie Sloane confirmed to the publication. “On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Shannen’s acting career was impressive and varied, stretching across decades of film and TV roles. She was most well known for her performance as Brenda Walsh in the iconic 1990s teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210.
She also starred in the cult favorite Charmed from 1998 to 2001.
Shannen revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015. In 2017, she announced that she was in remission, but in 2020 she had revealed that the cancer had returned. Last year, Shannen shared that the disease had spread to her brain.
After news of her death was reported, Shannen’s fellow celebrities and former co-stars took to social media to pay his respects and share their grief:
In a statement to People, former Charmed costar Alyssa Milano said, “It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of. She was a talented actress, beloved by many and the world is less without her. My condolences to all who loved her.”
Our condolences go out to Shannen’s family at this time.
