Peacock has announced that the new Crystal Lake series will stream next year, but the Friday the 13th prequel has already outdone previous Jason Voorhees re-imaginings thanks to the show’s period setting. Although many horror movie reboots have attempted to breathe new life into franchises that began in the 80s, few of these projects have been set during the decade itself.
The Friday the 13th movies produced by Sean S Cunningham in the 80s are the sort of slasher sequels that critics spoke about when they complained about the sub-genre. If the Crystal Lake tv show takes a set of teenage counselors to Camp Crystal Lake, infuses the stock stereotypes with more humanity and depth than viewers expect, then the friday the 13th crystal lake series could utilize its 80s period setting for maximum dramatic impact.
