8 Things We Hope Will Happen Before Blue Bloods Ends

Now that we’ve had time to digest the heartbreaking cancelation news, we’re focusing on the things we hope will happen before Blue Bloods ends.

Every member of the Reagan family deserves a strong wrap-up.

Nothing should be left hanging by the time the final credits roll, and the series finale should feel like an ending.

The Blue Bloods writers have always been proud of avoiding soap opera-like nonsense, so they’ll probably be offering new cases and political problems until the last episode.

Still, that final family dinner will be a tearjerker if it’s done the way we hope and expect it to be.

Blue Bloods Gives Us A Hint Of The Reagans’ Next Chapter

Even If A Spinoff Never Materializes, The Reagan Family Should Expand

After spending fourteen years with the Reagan family, it’ll be cold comfort to know that they are ending in a good place, but it’s better than nothing.

It’ll help soften the blow if the ending is written as the end of this chapter of their family history rather than the end of everything, forever.

If there is a Blue Bloods spinoff, the series finale could help set it up.

Still, one of the things we hope will happen before Blue Bloods ends is that we get a real sense of each member moving into a new phase of life, even if it’s not one that will be shared with viewers.

We’ll always be heartbroken about this series ending, but if it at least has a satisfying conclusion, that will help.

Frank Steps Down As Commissioner

Clearing A Path For The Next Reagan Would Be Beautiful

It only makes sense for the series to end with Frank retiring.

His determination to be a man of integrity no matter what the mayor or his Dream Team think, coupled with the fact that two of his kids are police officers, has been at the heart of Blue Bloods.

Additionally, Frank’s retirement would close this chapter in his life and open a new one for the next police commissioner, especially if it’s someone else in the Reagan family.

There are several options for the perfect commissioner to replace Frank at the end of Blue Bloods.

Jamie makes the most sense if another Reagan is to become commissioner, as he is mostly level-headed and does what he thinks is right.

The Police Commissioner’s office should not be a dynasty, however, and Frank only got the job because the person after Henry was corrupt.

That’s why I’d love it if Abigail became the new commissioner.

She’s been loyal to Frank, is unafraid to stand up to him, and has worked as a cop before.

No one knows the job better than her after working with Frank all these years.

Either way, one of the things we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is Frank passing the torch to a new commissioner.

That would be a beautiful way to end the series.

Jamie And Eddie Start Their Family

A New Reagan Baby Symbolizes The Reagan Family Going On After The Series Ends

A sudden pregnancy is a little bit of a tired TV trope, but it would work as part of a series finale.

The most heartbreaking thing about losing Blue Bloods is that we’ll no longer have the opportunity to be part of this fictional family, but the next best thing is knowing that the family will continue.

That’s why one of the things we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that Eddie announces she’s expecting.

This is the kind of storyline that wouldn’t work if the show was continuing because it wouldn’t be realistic for Eddie to continue being active in the field until close to her due date, and figuring out what to do with her while she’s unable to work would be tricky.

However, with the series ending, these logistical difficulties disappear.

Instead, Eddie’s pregnancy could be a feel-good note to end the finale on.

It would be especially touching if she and Jamie decide to name the baby after Henry (but please, no Henry death!)

Baez On Edge - Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 8
(CBS / Michael Parmalee)

Danny Gets Together With Baez (Or With Someone Else)

He Has Been Moving Toward A New Love, So Let’s Have It!

Danny’s been a widower for six years, and there’s no need for him to still be alone at the end of the series.

Many people never remarry — Frank and Henry have both been widowers for decades — but Danny’s recently admitted that he has been afraid to meet someone new because he’s afraid of losing them again.

There has been a lot of speculation that when Blue Bloods ends, Danny will be with Baez.

Whether that happens or not, he deserves to end the series in a happy, new relationship, so one of the things we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that his romantic future is made clear.

Even if it’s with psychic Maggie Gibson, who is my least favorite choice.

One More Henry-Centered Plot

The Reagan Patriarch Deserves A Strong Story Before The Series Ends

Henry has spent far too much of Season 14 being a voice at the dinner table and not much else.

One of the things we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that he gets a strong, memorable story.

All we ask is it not be a swan song before his needless death.

That would be a depressing ending that nobody wants!

Henry often butts heads with Jamie, who tends to treat him like he’s feeble because he’s old, so if his final story resolves that problem, it would be a perfect ending for him.

Bonus points if he hangs out with Donna (Erika Slezak) again.

She’s a bit more free-spirited than Henry is and always puts a smile on his face.

Erin Faces Off With Jack Boyle Again

Forget Romance — Let Them Spar In Court

Erin and Jack Boyle have been the ultimate will-they-won’t-they couple, flirting constantly with the idea of reconciling years after they broke up but never quite getting there.

Whether or not they ultimately reunite, one of the things we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that Erin and Jack are adversaries in the courtroom again.

Jack always pulls out all the stops, and it gets under Erin’s skin, making it harder for her to focus on winning the case.

There hasn’t been enough Erin in court lately, and having to deal with her ex-husband on a big case would make a final courtroom scene twice as sweet.

It would also reinforce the idea of Erin as a fighter for justice, which would be a perfect ending for her.

Sean is Robbed on Campus - Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 9
(CBS / 2023 CBS Broadcasting )

Sean Gets Some Advice About His Future From His Big Brother

If Jack Reagan Returns, It Should Be To Help Sean Start His Next Chapter

One of the charming things about the early seasons of Blue Bloods is that Danny’s kids were played by real-life brothers Tony and Andrew Terraciano.

When Tony Terraciano decided to go to college, his Blue Bloods counterpart was written out.

While it’s fun that Sean has grown up on the show and is still there, he needs one more visit from his brother before the series ends.

This could set up a Blue Bloods spinoff about Sean.

Even more importantly, it would let the brothers reunite, reinforcing the series’ legacy of putting family first.

Sean’s future is up in the air.

He’s been going to college, but it isn’t clear what he’s going to do with his life.

He could follow in his family’s footsteps and become a cop, live out his childhood dream of becoming a firefighter, or do something else altogether.

One thing we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that Sean figures it out, preferably with his brother’s help.

How sweet would it be for Andrew Terraciano’s real-life older brother to give his fictional alter ego advice on figuring out his future?

A Huge Final Family Dinner Including People Who Have Moved Away

A Family Dinner Is A Given, But The Last One Should Be Special

There’s no doubt that Blue Bloods will end with one last family dinner.

This is the most iconic and popular part of the show.

The final dinner should be special, more like a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner (even if the episode isn’t holiday-themed) than a regular Sunday dinner.

One thing we hope happens before Blue Bloods ends is that every living Reagan — and honorary Reagans, too — comes to the final Reagan family dinner.

Nicky and Jack are an absolute bare minimum. Danny could invite both Baez and Jackie, Erin could invite Anthony, and Henry could invite Donna.

The Dream Team could all be there, too, so that everyone can toast to the Reagan family one last time.

That would be expensive and hard to film, but it’s a beautiful dream that we hope comes true anyway.

Blue Bloods’ cancelation leaves a big hole for people who love family dramas, so it needs to at least go out with a heartfelt toast to our favorite fictional family that includes every character who loves them.
