Just for them. Alison Brie and Dave Franco have been relatively private about their relationship through the years, but on the rare occasion that they do open up about each other, their quotes are swoon-worthy.

Us Weekly revealed in May 2012 that the Community alum and the Neighbors actor had been dating for “at least five or six months.” The couple largely kept their romance outside the spotlight until Us confirmed in August 2015 that they were engaged.

“I don’t even know if I want to get married,” Brie told Elle Canada in 2012. “I’ve never been the girl who’s planning my dream wedding — I was always practicing my speech for the Oscars. That was my dream, which is kind of sad but kind of great.”

The actress elaborated on her aversion to marriage before noting that the right person could affect her point of view. “I don’t know that I’m the marrying kind,” she said. “It’s hard to work in an industry that changes from minute to minute and then lock into thinking of something as forever. Us confirmed in March 2017 that Brie and Franco tied the knot. “It was great. It was really special. It was intimate, and it was really fun,” he told Entertainment Tonight of their “low-profile” wedding.

The GLOW alum got real in June 2018 about the pair’s decision to not expand their family, noting that they consider their cats Harry and Arturo to be their “children.”

“I don’t really want to have kids. It’s great because I don’t worry about when I should get pregnant — between seasons, while we’re shooting the show — I don’t think about it every day,” she explained to The Sunday Times. “It would be nice, but I think of all the things that would be so stressful. I think about how much we’re involved in our cats’ lives. Oh, my God, if it was a child!”

The duo have collaborated with each other on a regular basis since their relationship began. Brie gushed via Instagram in August 2021 that she “wrote a movie with my favorite person in the world and he agreed to direct it too,” referring to her and Franco’s Somebody I Used to Know.

Winning Her Over

The Mad Men alum reiterated in a February 2016 interview with Yahoo! Style that marriage “never really interested” her. However, the actor changed her mind.  

“I just met that person that I was like, ‘Well, I’m really in love with you and would like to grow old with you,’” she recalled. “I actually think it’s much more romantic when two people are like, ‘Oh, I could go either way on marriage, but I want to marry you.’”

Brie revealed during a June 2017 appearance on Larry King Now that Franco got down on one knee in Big Sur, California, but she didn’t answer him right away. “I was so shocked that I actually burst out laughing and asked him a number of times if he was being serious before saying yes,” she recounted.

Brie recounted the “very romantic story” of how she met Franco in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Her friend invited him to dinner after they bumped into each other at the airport. The pal then texted the Los Angeles native under the table to see if she wanted to hook up with the Nerve actor and she said yes. Franco replied that he was “in,” but their friend made them both promise to keep the exchange quiet. 

“It was the perfect setup because we both got to leave the restaurant [and] head out to the evening of drinking and debauchery having, like, a sexy secret that we knew the other person was on board,” Brie said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in July 2020. That turned into “48 hours of drugs and sex and a lot of making out.” 

Brie then followed Franco to New York and Paris, where he was shooting a movie. “He left a secret note in my sweatshirt on our last day of our trip in New York, saying, ‘Come with me to Paris,’ and so in cliché fashion … How could I say no?”

The 21 Jump Street actor made his directorial debut with The Rental and tapped Brie to star in the film. “It was very comforting to be able to go home to her at the end of each day,” he exclusively told Us in July 2020. “She was always there to build me up in the right ways, giving me confidence and reminding me that we were doing good work. I truly don’t think I could have done this without her.”

Supporting Her Man

“So my husband’s directorial debut THE RENTAL comes out tomorrow and holy s–t…I’m so damn proud of him,” Brie captioned a photo via Instagram of her husband behind-the-scenes in July 2020. “He made a beautiful, complicated, horrifying film. And I got to be in it! This film is special to me in so many ways and I’m just so excited for you all to see it. Here’s a picture of the two of us on set together. You can see how I never fail to make this guy laugh.  “

Love on Set

Brie marked the conclusion of filming for her and Franco’s film with a PDA-filled Instagram pic in November 2021. “That’s a wrap on Somebody I Used to Know!” she wrote. “Spoiler alert: I’m in love with the director.”

Not Quite the Throwback

“My wife and I, we met at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Over that weekend, she was wearing this silver Mardi Gras mask on her head, and I’d try to take it from her and she wouldn’t let me take it. It was this playful back and forth,” Franco recalled during an appearance on The Late Late Show in February 2022. “And when she left New Orleans, I was still there for work, she left a little note for me. What she didn’t know was that I kept the mask.”

The Fright Night star later incorporated the special moment into his proposal.

“So, cut to five years later, we’re going up to Big Sur and I decide this is the trip where I’m gonna propose. I knew she wanted to pick out the ring herself, so I was like, ‘I’m not gonna have the ring, but I’ve got the mask. That’s the special thing I’ve got,” he added. “So, she turns around, I’m on one knee, I’m wearing the mask and holding up the ring.”

Franco concluded: “But, because it had been five years, she couldn’t place the mask. She didn’t know what it was! So the entire proposal is her saying, ‘What is happening right now?’ And it’s me trying to explain how sweet it is that I kept the mask for five years!”

A Successful Marriage

“It’s all about good communication,” Brie told Entertainment Tonight in August 2022. “Everybody says it, but I think that’s why we try to work together so much honestly, just so we can spend more time together. So we don’t have to be apart so much. … But even when we’re apart, we really make an effort to connect every day and that’s important.”

Drunk in Love

To celebrate the premiere of their Somebody I Used to Know trailer, which they cowrote, Franco released a throwback audio note of his wife expressing her love for him.

“We found an old voice recording from 10 years ago,” he said in the January 2023 video. “This is a real recording of Alison expressing her love for me. I saved it in my phone as ‘Alison drunk.’”

In the clip, the Glow alum can be heard mumbling incoherently about a character.
