DNC Should “Step Back from Celebrities”

Kamala Harris has officially become the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 2024 Presidential Election, and many celebrities have been quick to embrace the campaign, including George Clooney, Barbara Streisand, Olivia Rodrigo, Mark Hamill, among others. But some, like Zach Galifianakis, have expressed worries that big names don’t automatically court big support.

“As a small-town guy from North Carolina … I do wish the DNC would step back from the celebrities a little bit,” Galifianakis told Variety while at the red carpet premiere of Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Thursday night. “It works to a point, but they have to win over rural America.”

Continuing, Galifianakis noted that “Hollywood thinks it’s so important, and that’s a problem.”

“Actors are people too, and they’re citizens too, but I’m more on the small-town side of that than I am on the Hollywood side of that,” he said. “That’s just me.”

Reportedly, some of Galifianakis’ castmates in Only Murders in the Building didn’t seem to have the same concerns. Kumail Nanjiani, for example, revealed plans to “make videos to get people to register to vote,” and hinted that he “might make some appearances later.”

Likewise, SNL alum Molly Shannon suggested that Harris would be a good candidate to host SNL, and expressed a desire to resurrect her Sally O’Malley character for a skit with the Vice President.

As for Only Murders in the Building’s stars — Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez — they all expressed general support for the Democratic ticket, but withheld from getting too specific at the premiere Thursday night.

The new season of Only Murders — which features Galifianakis playing a fictional version of himself — will debut on August 27th on Hulu, with new episodes streaming on Tuesdays. New subscribers can sign up for a 30-day free trial. Alternatively, a new bundle combining Hulu, Disney+, and Max launched last month offering a savings of 38% compared to the price of the services if purchased separately.
