The Last of Us Showrunner Developing New Pirates of the Caribbean Movie

In a recent interview with Los Angeles Times, The Last of Us co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that, before the WGA strike, he had begun developing a brand new Pirates of the Caribbean movie with the original franchise’s scribe Ted Elliott. Mazin confirmed that Disney liked Elliot’s script for the untitled project, which was unexpected because the story they made is “too weird.”

“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did,” Mazin said. “And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”

What’s next for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise?

It’s currently unclear if Mazin’s project was one of the two movies that Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously teased, or if it’s an entirely new project. One of them is the Margot Robbie-led movie which was previously thought to be canceled. “We have a very good script,” Bruckheimer shared. “We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them.”

Robbie’s project is part of Disney’s growing list of ongoing and upcoming live-action film adaptations of Disney theme parks including the Tower of Terror film led by Scarlett Johansson, the Jungle Cruise sequel featuring the return of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, and the upcoming Big Thunder Mountain movie.
