The upcoming Max animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai officially has a release date, with Warner Bros. Discovery announcing the show is set to premiere on May 23, 2023.
The upcoming animated family adventure series will act as a sort of prequel to the original Gremlins films. The series takes place in 1920s Shanghai and follows the Wing family as it first meets the young Mogwai that will eventually come to be known as Gizmo.

The full cast of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will include Ming-Na Wen, James Hong, BD Wong, Matthew Rhys, Izaac Wang, AJ LoCascio, and Gabrielle Nevaeh Green. There will also be a litany of guest stars in the series, including Zach Galligan, who starred as Billy Peltzer in the original Gremlins films. Other guest voice actors include Sandra Oh, Randall Park, George Takei, and Bowen Yang.
“Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 Gremlins film) accepts the dangerous task to take Gizmo home and embarks on a journey through the Chinese countryside,” reads the official synopsis for the series. “Sam and Gizmo are joined by a teenage street thief named Elle, and together, they encounter—and sometimes battle—colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Along their quest, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”
