choosing to quit, a massive reinvention of their ideal career is underway. u003c/p> u003cp>The number of employees who are considering quitting their jobs right now is around 40%, a number that hasn’t changed much in recent months. u003c/p> u003cp>A u003ca href=”https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work?OCID=AID2101651_SEM_ConnexityCSE&szredirectid=16250758885630100478810070302008005″>surveyu003c/a> by u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/company/microsoft” target=”_blank”>Microsoftu003c/a> in March found that 41% of workers were thinking about leaving their jobs, and u003ca href=”https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-great-attrition-is-making-hiring-harder-are-you-searching-the-right-talent-pools”>another surveyu003c/a> last week by u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/company/mckinsey” target=”_blank”>McKinseyu003c/a> put that number at 40%.u003c/p> u003cp>“This isn’t just a passing trend, or a pandemic-related change to the labor market,” Bonnie Dowling, a co-author of the McKinsey report, u003ca href=”https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/20/40percent-of-us-workers-are-considering-quitting-their-jobs-soon-where-theyre-going.html”>told u003cem>CNBCu003c/em>u003c/a>. “There’s been a fundamental shift in workers’ mentality, and their willingness to prioritize other things in their life beyond whatever job they hold.”u003c/p> u003cp>But while the number of workers who want to leave their jobs has remained remarkably consistent, fewer and fewer are reverting to traditional office jobs, with a growing number seeking nontraditional roles, or even the opportunity to start a new business.u003c/p> u003ch2>u003cstrong>‘The Great Rethink’u003c/strong>u003c/h2> u003cdiv id=”favorites_widget” class=”favorites_widget”>u003c/div>n u003cp>Since 2021, records have been racking up for workers prepared to voluntarily leave their jobs. u003c/p> u003cp>It’s been dubbed the u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2022/04/11/great-grief-resignation-covid-pandemic-workers-labor-shortage-economy-workplace-mental-health-careers-sherry-walling/”>Great Resignationu003c/a>, and with u003ca href=”https://www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htm”>4.3 million people quitting their jobsu003c/a> in May, the number of resignations is still u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2021/10/21/the-great-resignation-is-no-joke/”>virtually unchangedu003c/a> from last year.u003c/p> u003cp>At first, resignations were being u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2022/03/09/great-resignation-seven-months-quit-job/”>fueledu003c/a> by workers desiring higher pay, better benefits, and more fulfilling work. Those same factors are still around right now, but with an added ingredient thrown into the mix: u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2022/07/14/inflation-refuels-great-resignation/”>inflationu003c/a>. u003c/p> u003cp>With prices in the U.S. running at a u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2022/07/13/us-inflation-accelerates9-1/”>40-year highu003c/a>, u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2022/03/10/workers-are-earning-more-but-inflation-impacts-what-they-can-afford/”>snail-paced wage raisesu003c/a>, and a u003ca href=”https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-06/us-job-openings-dip-slightly-to-11-3-million-remain-near-record”>near-record high number of job openingsu003c/a>, why wouldn’t workers be looking for greener pastures?u003c/p> u003cp>But after years of pandemic-era living, those new pastures are more diverse than ever, and many resigning workers are deciding to take much more adventurous steps.u003c/p> u003cp>As many as 18% of U.S. workers who quit their job are returning to work in nontraditional roles, according to the McKinsey report, including part-time jobs, temporary gigs, or even by starting their own business. u003c/p> u003cp>Many workers who quit their job also do so to shift towards a different industry, according to the report, even if it means departing from a highly lucrative field. u003c/p> u003cp>Of people in the past year who quit jobs in finance and insurance areas, 65% did not return to the workforce or departed for a different job sector, as McKinsey’s Dowling u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2022/07/18/mckinsey-finds-finance-professionals-quitting-changing-industries/”>toldu003c/a> u003cem>Fortuneu003c/em>’s Sheryl Estrada this week.u003c/p> u003cp>The desire for u003ca href=”https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/great-resignation-rise-flexibility-its-impact-employers-payal-ahuja/”>more flexibilityu003c/a> has been one of main sticking points of the Great Resignation, as the pandemic popularized employee habits like u003ca href=”https://fortune.com/2022/07/18/workers-dont-fear-ignoring-office-mandates-wfh-research/”>remote
