Trailer unveiled for Heavier Trip, sequel to Finnish heavy metal

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Finnish heavy metal comedy Heavier Trip, the sequel to the cult 2018 film Heavy Trip.

Continuing from the first movie, the story follows the underground extreme metal band Impaled Rektum on their journey to hone their sound, and now they’ve been booked for “the holy grail of metal festivals”: Germany’s Wacken Open Air.

The heavy metal comedy sees the band on a “crazy road trip across Northern Europe” to reach the German fest. As seen in the trailer, Impaled Rektum encounter seedy industry types who try to influence their sound, rival bands, and even BABYMETAL, who appear in the trailer along with their song “Gimme Chocolate!!”

According to Variety, the sequel takes place a few years after the end of the original film, and finds Impaled Rektum in prison. When the guitarist’s father falls ill and needs financial help, the band plans to break out of jail and embark on a journey to play Wacken Open Air.

Shared co-directors directors Juuso Laatio and Jukka Vidgren in a statement: “If there’s one thing the world needs, it’s feel-good movies about dudes who play symphonic post-apocalyptic reindeer-grinding Christ-abusing extreme war pagan Fennoscandic metal. We’re so excited to bring Heavier Trip to audiences in North America and make lots of noise with this sequel’s release!”

Doppelgänger Releasing, a genre-focused label of Music Box Films, acquired North American distribution rights to Heavier Trip, which has scenes in both Finnish and English in the trailer. Charades is handling world sales rights.

The movie was filmed in the directors’ native Finland and at last year’s muddy Wacken Open Air festival. Swedish occult rock band Year of the Goat have provided the complete score for the film, while Finnish death metal vet Mika Lammassaari (Mors Subita, ex-Eternal Tears of Sorrow) wrote the music for Impaled Rektum.

“This has been my 10-year plan, to collaborate with them somehow,” said Juuso Laatio of working with Year of the Goat. “I had to make the first film so that I had something to give them: ‘Would you, would you be in the second film?’ I’ve been a big, big fan of them for a long time, and this is a personal project in many ways for me. It fulfills a lot of my fanboy dreams.”‘

The first movie, Heavy Trip, was met with overwhelmingly rave reviews, scoring a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The sequel is set to hit theaters sometime this fall. Watch the trailer for Heavier Trip below.
