Squid Game is a South Korean survival series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix. The series revolves around a secret contest where 456 players, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win a huge prize. It was released worldwide on September 17, 2021, to critical acclaim and international attention. It is Netflix’s most-watched series, becoming the top-viewed program in 94 countries.
In January 2022 Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that the second season of Squid Game is on the way. In an interview with the Korea Times, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he is in discussions with Netflix for a second and third season.
This is wildly surprising news that Hwang Dong-hyuk had to return to the franchise for a second season. However, ideas for where the story could go next must be lighting up the creative brain of the Korean filmmaker.
Ten months of filming will take production into the spring of 2024. Naver reports that script reading is scheduled for June 23rd, and filming will begin in July. Behind-the-scenes “large scale” auditions have also taken place, with many well-known actors and actresses in South Korea taking part.
We’ve already known for some time now that the expectation is a 2024 release date for Squid Game season 2. With filming expected to last ten months from when it begins in the summer of 2023, a season 2 release in the first half of 2024 is impossible. If the plan is for the series to still land on Netflix in 2024, then the series could be the big Christmas release for the year.
