The Lake Law Firm Ensures Victims of 3M Earplugs are Heard by Madison Newman

3M earplugs were standard issue in the military from 2003 to 2015 to protect service members’ hearing under loud conditions like aircraft, artillery, explosions, and machinery. However, 3M earplugs have allegedly cost hundreds of thousands of veterans their hearing due to a glaring design defect.

Amidst the clamor of dangerously noisy environments, the military equips individuals with earplugs to preserve their hearing. In 2003, American manufacturer 3M won a highly coveted and exclusive contract to supply the military with its Dual-Ended Combat Arms V2 Earplugs. Unfortunately, the company shortened the earplugs when prototypes proved too large for combat helmets and carrying cases, but this modification had grave consequences.

This defect made the earplugs too short to fit securely in service members’ ears, causing them to dislodge without the user noticing. The compromised protective sealing resulted in inadequate protection, leaving service members susceptible to developing tinnitus or hearing loss. Service members have rallied together, filing lawsuits against 3M for distributing the earplugs despite reportedly knowing about the fault in their product.

“What’s infuriating for these service members is that 3M had the chance to correct the defect, but decided to proceed with the design anyway,” said Michael Blom, Esq., a partner at The Lake Law Firm and a leading mass tort attorney. “At the very least, 3M could have disclosed the problem so the military could have briefed service members on making adjustments to protect their hearing.”

As they navigate the challenging aftermath of life with diminished hearing, service members aim to hold 3M accountable for what they consider an unacceptable betrayal. The Lake Law Firm offers its resources and expertise to support service members in 3M earplug lawsuits.

Although 3M ceased production of its Dual-Ended Combat Arms V2 Earplugs in 2015, the ongoing litigation strives to set a precedent and deter other manufacturers from knowingly sacrificing the quality and integrity of safety gear designed for the military. The Lake Law Firm’s admiration for service members has fueled the firm’s commitment to assisting those affected by 3M earplugs in filing claims.

“People understand that joining the military comes with certain sacrifices, but the hearing damage linked to 3M earplugs was an avoidable tragedy,” Blom said. “These service members deserved better, and we intend to help them confront 3M.”
