War and Revolt: Netflix Sets Period Thriller Movie From Park

The Oldboy filmmaker Park Chan-wook has officially partnered with Netflix for an upcoming period thriller titled War and Revolt, which will served as his first collaboration with the streamer. Park has signed on to write and produce the project which will be led by Train to Busan: Peninsula actor Gang Dong-won and Deliver Us From Evil star Park Jeong-min.

Park Chan-wook is best known for his acclaimed work on a number of South Korean movies that were able to receive international recognition. This includes Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, The Handmaiden, and the most recent one Decision to Leave. Besides War and Revolt, Park Chan-wook is also currently attached to HBO’s series adaptation of The Sympathizer, in which he’s serving as a director and co-writer.

What to Expect in War and Revolt?

War and Revolt is a historical drama set against the chaos of war. It will center around the gripping journey of two childhood friends turned adversaries, Cheon-young (Gang) and Jong-ryeo (Park). Joining the leads are Cha Seung-won (A Korean Odyssey), Kim Shin-rock (Beyond Evil), Jin Sun-kyu (Extreme Job), and Jung Sung-ill (The Glory).

“In War and Revolt, Gang takes center stage as the enigmatic Cheon-young, a character whose remarkable martial prowess defies his humble origins as a slave,” reads the synopsis. “Struggling to break free from the chains of servitude, Cheon-young will be brought to life by Gang’s extraordinary talent, exuding charm and delivering breathtaking action sequences that will leave audiences in awe.

“Meanwhile, Park Jeong-min assumes the role of Jong-ryeo, Cheon-young’s former master and scion of Joseon’s most influential military family. After passing the military service exam, Jong-ryeo becomes King Seonjo’s personal guard, leading to a heart-wrenching reunion with his former friend. Park’s portrayal is expected to be nothing short of mesmerizing, as he delves deep into the complex psyche of a man torn between friendship and duty, ultimately facing his own downfall.”

The film will be directed by Kim Sang-man from a screenplay written by Park Chan-wook and Shin Chul. It hails from MOHO Film and Semicolon Studio.
